The Houses 101 workshop is designed to teach new homeowners, prospective homeowners, and veteran homeowners alike about the many layers and systems that make up a house along with some basic home maintenance skills. Workshop participants will walk around our Casa Colina house tracking the different components of the house, learning about their functions, key safety tips, and how to tell if anything is awry. Class topics will include, but not limited to:
Plumbing systems
HVAC systems
Electrical systems
Natural gas
Roof and gutter systems
Interior finish wall assemblies and framing
Foundations
Windows and Doors

The Power Tools 101 workshop will teach the skills you need to use a few of the more common and useful power tools in the DIY repertoire safely and skillfully. Students will have the opportunity to watch demos of each tool and then will go around to “tool stations” to try out using the tools for themselves, with supervision. Tools we’ll cover will include (but not limited to):
Circular Saw
Miter Saw
Impact Driver/Drill
Multi-Tool
Sawzall
Jig Saw

In our Intro to Welding workshop we will cover the basics of welding using a MIG Welder. All attendees will have their own welder and the opportunity to weld their own small take-home item. We’ll start by covering the basics of how welding works, understanding the applications of welding, and what precautions are necessary to weld safely. The second part of the workshop will be dedicated to practicing using the welder skillfully and safely, welding a bead or a line, and learning how to safely cut scrap metal, before we embark on welding our own take-home items.
